Margaret Pinnington

In memory of Margaret Pinnington - Co-Founder of NADA UK

It is with deep sadness that we are informing you that Margaret died on Friday the 26th of March after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She died peacefully with the support of her wonderful and extensive family. A celebration of her life was held on Thursday 1st April.

Her joyous and resilient spirit was remembered by close family and friends. The ceremony was moving and the venue too small to hold all who came to remember the impact she had on their lives and those of many others.

There will be many more who will miss her who have their own experience of the impact of meeting or working with her. We would love to hear of any memories that other NADA members have of Margaret to continue the celebration of her wonderful spirit.

I am totally shocked and saddened to learn of Margaret’s passing. I had no idea she was suffering with cancer. I was Secretary of the Society of Auricular Acupuncturists from 1985 until 2008 and during much of this time Margaret and I formed a great friendship and admiration for each other. I remember being invited to Liverpool for one of NADAs conferences several years ago, and was made to feel very welcome by her. She was a very special person to me and will be greatly missed by the Auricular Acupuncture profession. My sincere condolences go out to her family.

  15. Jim K says:

I first met her back in the very early 70s – when I was an enthusiastic young community worker. Margaret took me under her wing – for I was a snotty nosed idealist – employed the Council. Whilst she had an amazing capacity for loving her family and friends she also had love for those who less fortunate in many ways. Her time as community activist clearly showed her great understanding of injustice and this fuelled her desire to help everyone she met along life’s way. The work that she has pioneered in the addictions field and acupuncture is just one part of her life’s work.

Margaret formed bonds with her friends and neighbours that would be life-long. She hated unfairness, cruelty, disadvantage and high handed and unreasonable official bullying – she would always fight for the under-dog, organise on behalf of the powerless and champion justice for all. Margaret was totally passionate about everything she did – she really cared.

She always tried to see the best in people but if this did not work out she was not the type to worry unduly she accepted the situations and made the best of it. She would not be daunted by what life threw at her and she would find some way round any situation. She was one of life’s doers. She was not one for waiting for outcomes she worked hard and made outcomes.

Margaret achieved so much in her life:-
    • A warm and tender loving relationship with all of her family
    • Caring for others especially those less fortunate than herself.
    • She had a fierce desire to educate people so that they could have a better quality of life.
    • She was a pioneer of Acupuncture and work around Drug Addiction and HIV
    • She used her excellent business acumen becoming an innovator and social entrepreneur.

But throughout all of this she touched so many lives in such a positive way she has left a legacy of love and respect. She will be remembered fondly by so many people. She made her world a better place for having been here and that is the mark of the truly great woman which she was. I hope that the work that Margaret carried out in Nada UK will grow from strength to strength.

Thanks to Nada for posting this tribute page.

I met Margaret on just three occasions, but each time was so memorable. I was blown away by her stories of the adventures she’d had, the places she’d been and the people she’d met. Margaret was a joyous and inspirational character. The last time I saw Margaret was in November last year in Manchester. I saw her walking down the street and hailed over to her; Margaret turned, looked and smiled. “Hello Dale” she said. I couldn’t believe she’d even remembered me. She gave me a great big hug and we chatted for a while. I can honestly say that she made me smile inside and out. I am truly saddened but I am extremely grateful to have met Margaret. What a wonderful person. See ya missus. x

Like many others have already written on here, I visited the site to contact Margaret / NADA UK to discuss training and was shocked and saddened to read the news of her passing. Margaret provided fantastic, inspirational training to a group of substance misuse workers (including me) in February / March 2007. She was a passionate teacher was clearly able to demonstrate the benefits of auricular acupuncture and pass on her passion to others. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and my heart goes out to those who knew her better than me. My thanks go out to Margaret for the work she did – she was an inspiration to all who knew her.
